Voter ID Debacle — Labor’s Top Stories of 2012

In what many contend was motivated by Republican efforts to suppress the traditionally Democratic minority vote in order to affect the Nov 2012 presidential election. Voter ID Legislation was introduced by national GOP leadership on the premise of avoiding wides spread voter fraud (which never existed in the first place). As a result, Organized Labor, in solidarity with countless other socially conscious organizations and the general public worked tirelessly to repeal the legislation prior to the presidential election. After tremendous efforts by organized labor throughout Philadelphia and vicinity and beyond, the legislation was blocked and ruled unenforceable in Pa in a ruling by Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson on Octber 2, 2012, only one month before the election. The issue is still undecided.
