– Please remember to place a grocery bag full of non-perishable food items by your mailbox this Saturday, May 10, 2014 so your letter carrier can collect it and have it delivered, along with all of the other bags, to your area food bank or food pantry in our communities.Saturday, May 10 is the 22nd annual letter carriers food drive across the United States which is the most successful single day food drive in the nation helping stock and restock the shelves of neighborhood food banks. If everybody helps we will be able to help feed hundreds of thousands of children of needy families across the U.S. as well as right here in Pennsylvania. Our national Food Drive partner “Feeding America” estimates that on a daily basis 49 million Americans may not know where their next meal is coming from. Sadly the figure includes 16 million children.
This has turned into a real community effort involving our AFL-CIO affiliates: the National Association of Letter Carriers the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association, the U.S. Postal Service, Campbell’s Soup, AARP’s Drive to End Hunger, United Way, Publix grocery stores, Valissis, Valpak and Uncle Bob’s Self Storage.
Our Pennsylvania AFL-CIO Labor Liaisons have been very busy helping to promote and recruit volunteers to help staff deliver the food to area food banks and pantries in their local communities on Saturday. Our liaisons have also helped organize press conferences to help build community support and awareness reminding people to please help us feed hungry families, some of whom are family, friends and neighbors.
We also appreciate the help and support provided by our local elected officials and our State Legislators for pitching in and helping to promote and support the food drive. Both the Pennsylvania State Senate and Pennsylvania State House of Representatives have approved Resolutions sponsored by State Senator Lisa Boscola, D-18 and State Representative Julia Harhart, R-183 designating Saturday May 10 as National Association of Letter Carriers day in Pennsylvania. As you can see feeding the hungry is not a Democratic or Republican issue it is an issue that impacts for all of us.
We appreciate your food donations and your support in helping make this year’s food drive a success by breaking the record of previous drives. Please remember to put your bag of non-perishable food items in a sturdy grocery bag for your letter carrier to collect this Saturday, May 10, 2014.
